What Companies Does Tesla Own
Written by Wesley Bates

Tesla is known for designing and manufacturing high-performance electric vehicles. Even though it is still a young company, it is quite valuable in the market and has several acquisitions.

After getting stronger in the market, Tesla also started providing energy generation sources, storage systems and services related to its products. The companies that Tesla owns are as follows:

Companies Acquired by Tesla

Companies Acquired by Tesla

1- SolarCity Corp.

SolarCity was founded by two cousins of Elon Musk in 2006 and Elon acquired the company from them in 2016. The company provides designing, manufacturing and installation of solar energy systems.

It also sells solar generated electricity. Acquiring SolarCity was a great move as it links Tesla’s energy storage with SolarCity’s energy generation.

2- Maxwell Technologies Inc.

Maxwell Technologies, previously known as Maxwell Laboratories, specializes in making ultracapacitors which can hold energy more than that of any ordinary capacitors.

Tesla acquired Maxwell Technologies in 2019 as Elon knew that ultracapacitors by the company will help a lot in the production of electric vehicles. The energy storage and power delivery tools by Maxwell Technologies are used in many sectors including transportation, industrial and grid storage areas.

3- Grohmann Engineering

Grohmann Engineering

Grohmann Engineering is a German company which specializes in the design and development of automated manufacturing systems.

Tesla wanted to acquire the company because the company’s manufacturing systems could increase the speed and efficiency of Tesla vehicles.

Tesla got ownership of the company in 2017. First the plan was to let the original owner of the company, Klaus Grohmann, handle the company but due to a disagreement, he was ousted.

4- Perbix Machine Co. Inc.

Perbix Machine specializes in designing and making high-end manufacturing equipment. Perbix was acquired by Tesla in 2017.

The company owned by Tesla provides Tesla with vehicle parts that are manufactured in-house which gives Tesla control over production.

5- Hibar Systems ltd.

Hibar Systems is known for making dispensing pumps and filling systems. The company also makes automated vacuum filling systems for lithium-ion batteries which are used in electric vehicles.

With the acquisition of Hibar in 2019, the company provides in-house battery cells to Tesla. This decreases the operating expenses of Tesla and makes it less reliant on other companies.

6- DeepScale

Another company owned by Tesla is DeepScale that was acquired by the company in 2020. The company helps Tesla develop driver assistance systems in the cars which are used as “robotaxis”.
